Climate Change Summit 2023: Green Transformation Event

The “Climate Change Summit 2023:  Green Transformation” organized jointly by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change of the Republic of Türkiye, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the Capital and Ekonomist magazines was held on June 14, 2023 in Istanbul.

The opening speeches of the event were given by Prof.  Dr.  Mehmet Emin BİRPINAR, Deputy Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and Chief Negotiator for Climate Change; Louisa VINTON, UNDP Resident Representative in Türkiye; and M. Cem BAŞAR, General Manager of Doğan Burda Magazine, and more than 200 senior executives and finance representatives were in attendance.

Two panels were held within the scope of “Climate Change Summit 2023:  Green Transformation” event.  The first panel, moderated by Orhan SOLAK, Head of the Climate Change Presidency, was entitled “Climate Change, Transformation Economy and Opportunities”, was attended by Cevdet ALEMDAR, Industry Group President of Sabancı Holding; M. Erkam KOCAKERIM, CEO of Limak Cement; Özgen ÖZKAN, CEO of Eczacıbaşı Building Products; and Tuğrul ARIKAN, General Manager of Anadolu Isuzu as panelists. The second panel, moderated by Talip YILMAZ, Editor-in-Chief of the Ekonomist Magazine, was entitled “Green Banking Effect on Growth”, and was attended by Aybala Şimşek GALPİN, Deputy General Manager of Strategy, Transformation and Financial Institutions at Şekerbank; Ayşegül AKAY, Deputy General Manager of Corporate Banking at İNG Türkiye; Beril OĞUZ, Deputy General Manager of the Financial Institutions and Sustainability Coordination Group at Denizbank; and Meral MURATHAN, Deputy General Manager of Financial Institutions and Investor Relations, Development Finance Institutions and Treasury at TSKB as panelists.

The issues discussed by the panels organized within the scope of the summit included efforts to combat climate change, adaptation, green transformation financing opportunities, and the transformation of high-emission sectors on the path to Türkiye’s 2053 net zero emission target, with particular focus on the challenges and opportunities. It was emphasized that the challenges faced in the fight against climate change could only be overcome through a Green Transformation with the contributions of the state, the private sector and all other stakeholders.
